Sean on Muriel Spark

Muriel Spark was a waspish, dark humoured genius- one of the genuine originals. The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie was written when she lived at Baldwin Crescent in Camberwell. The house deserves a Blue Plaque. I can just see her, in the late 1950s, offering her ration book in the local shops at Camberwell, popping in for a gin and orange at the Hermit's Cave as she worked on her new book set in 1930s Edinburgh, little knowing that it would make her name.

Sarah Doyle

Created for Camberwell Arts Festival’s 20th anniversary in 2014 for the event ‘Chutney Preserves 8 - Camberwell The 8th Wonder of the World’ My wonder was the famous Camberwell pub ‘The Hermit’s Cave’. The costume is based on the traditional Tarot Card image of a hermit. For the event I invited people to on this rare occasion take your photo with a Hermit. A once in a lifetime opportunity!
