Rebecca Griffiths’ exhibition HARDWARE (part of Camberwell Arts Festival) will be situated in the window of Camberwell Superstore, a well-known DIY shop on Camberwell Church Street. The ceramic sculptures take the form of utilitarian objects and reflect upon the quiet solace of labour and craft during times of forced isolation. Although the sculptures align themselves with DIY supplies, their fragility and inherent lack of function instead render them as silent relics of the recent past.

The sculptures reference mechanical operating parts, hand-tools, electronic components and miscellaneous fixtures and fittings. The design details of such objects are closely observed through drawing and model making before being playfully translated in clay.

Griffiths uses unglazed coloured clay, combining methods of slab building, throwing and extrusion to create objects that reveal the tactile and fragile qualities of the medium. Each piece is assembled from numerous clay elements, brought together to achieve a balance in form, interior/exterior volume, and surface texture. The labour and craft invested in these sculptures draw attention to the mundane details of designed objects, preserving them through fired clay - an act of the futile and absurd.

Rebecca Griffiths is a London-based artist and graduate of the Royal College of Art. She explores our connection to everyday objects using wood, paper, found objects and ceramics. Recent exhibitions include Tooling up, Standing by, 2020, The Zetter Hotel (solo show), Wells Contemporary, 2020 (Wells Cathedral and online); Quarantzine, 2020 (online); RIC Visual Arts Exhibition, 2019, Sun Pier House, Kent; Small is Beautiful 2017, Flowers Gallery, London.
