Camberwell Free Film Festival 2020
Camberwell Free Film Festival (CFFF) is back this year, aiming to showcase a powerful yet eclectic collection of visual experiences from independent filmmakers, animators and storytellers.
The CFFF is a free community festival founded in 2013 by Victor Ferreiro. Motivated by a lack of cinema venues in the area and a desire to strengthen the community and support local independent businesses, Victor set up this volunteer-run, free-to-attend annual film programme, held in the public spaces of SE5 South London.
Under the guidance of Victor, Camberwell Arts will be assisting to run the Camberwell Free Film Festival in 2020 and beyond, under the mission to support local business, strengthen community bonds and enjoy a shared love of cinema – for free.
Camberwell Arts will carry on the egalitarian, communal experience of the CFFF as first created by Victor and his team:
“We always think it’s important to take a chance on documentaries/films which may get forgotten by mainstream audiences. We are more than happy to show a few of those and we do that regularly. Our view is that nobody should ever be intimidated to take a chance on something different. This is very much in the spirit of what going to the cinema used to be about - it wasn’t elitist - it was about the communal experience. All the films we choose are very watchable and have a story to tell. Take a walk and look around the community where you live. Explore the architecture and places that perhaps you didn’t realise were there - and most importantly - meet the people - be curious and enjoy it! Its has to be more than just a commute to and from work.”
— V.F.
Previous iterations of the festival have shown a wide variety of film, from cult classics and fan favourites to social histories, local investigations and stand-alone experiences. This year, the CFFF offering is all online, for free, for one day only. We will be exploring various themes related to lockdown and the pandemic. This could include:
- Families and resilience in lockdown
- Surrealist / abstract escapes from the new normal
- Alternative Christmas / festive messages
- Permanent closures and new beginnings
- Forgotten peoples and local heroes
