Michael’s palace of art is a hidden treasure lying in his back garden. But why has it never been recognised by the establishment?

Builder Michael has spent the last 30 years transforming rubbish into beauty. Since arriving as a 10 year-old in the Windrush in 1965, he has found his way blocked at every turn by the artistic establishment. After being told at art school that “your people normally drive buses”, he was given no option but to take up a manual labouring job. It’s a job he still does aged 63, but he’s found a way to make it work with his true obsession: making art out of the waste materials found on his building sites. This is the extraordinary story of Michael’s art.
