Cut-Out Collage with Gabriela Szulman

Draw Inspiration from the work that Matisse created in his later years to create your own collages using simple shapes and vibrant colours.

During the last decade of his life, when Henri Matisse was no longer able to stand or use his hands with the dexterity to which he was accustomed, he started to 'draw with scissors'. His now famous cut-outs are works of wide-ranging color and complexity where he used scissors to transform paint and paper into a world of plants, animals, figures, and shapes.

In this class, we will draw inspiration from his magnificent late work to create bold and colourful collages. You just need to gather a few simple materials that will be detailed further in the pre-class notes. I can also offer a 'private' version of this class for a minimum of 6 participants at a time to suit you. This is a great opportunity to join in a creative activity with your family, friends or colleagues. Please contact me to discuss if interested.

About Gabriela

Gabriela is an artist and maker. She creates prints and collages, greeting cards, jewellery and scarves with images inspired by memory, nostalgia and a love of everything vintage. Her work is often humorous and whimsical – unless her romantic side takes over and then you enter into a fairy-tale territory of old-fashioned script, pages of books and music scores populated by chivalrous gentlemen, glamorous ladies, butterflies and rabbits.

She blends a fusion of painting and digital media – acrylic, watercolour and ink with digital print – onto paper and canvas to create pictures, quirky greetings cards and a range of “art to wear” which so far includes silk scarves and a jewellery collection. Old photograph albums, vintage documents, magazines, books, cards, knitting pattern books and scraps of writing are things that make Gabriela very happy. Second-hand bookshops, junk shops, market stalls, attics and long-forgotten boxes are her treasure trove. In addition to her own creative pursuits, she is passionate about inspiring other people and sharing her skills, so she devotes a good portion of her time to teaching.
