More about the artist

David graduated in Fine Art from Central St. Martins London in 1996. Since then he has followed many specialist painting and drawing courses (anatomical drawing, classical ‘atelier’ portraiture and still-life techniques) to develop his technical skills.

As a realist, figurative painter, he concentrates on portraits, studies of the model, still lifes and occasional paintings of locations – things of the everyday. They are usually in oils, occasionally in acrylics, and almost always painted from life, in the studio. A lot of thought goes into the subtle compositions, although they may be painted quickly and loosely, with few corrections. The large-scale works necessarily take many sessions, and then it’s a question of many re-paintings and refinements. The end-result is paintings with subtle and brilliant colour, and sensitivity to the mood and character of the sitter, or the form and energy of the things depicted. The actual handling of the paint shows what painting can do best – varying from thin and smooth to juicy impasto and vigorous marks, creating resonant compositions with many layers of subtleties – images that bear repeated viewing and living with.
