Artist Statement
Catherine-Marie Longtin is a French Canadian quilt-maker and textile artist living and working in South East London. Growing up in Montreal, she was surrounded by arts and crafts. She learned how to sew from her mother and started experimenting with fabrics by sewing bed linens and kitchen textiles. Ten years ago she left a career in academia and started quilting. She has been making quilts full time for the last five years.
Her designs are inspired by minimalist abstract art and use a limited palette of colours. She works mostly with cotton and linen but also with wool, along with a collection of carefully curated prints, often from Liberty but also Japanese prints and striped woven cloths. She has been collecting fabrics for 12 years and uses her collection as a palette to create her quilts.
Each year Catherine-Marie creates a limited collection of quilts that she sells through fairs and the Camberwell Arts open studios event. She undertakes commission work, which often involves making a quilt around a piece of fabric brought in by her client to create a timeless heirloom. She also gives one-to-one workshops on quilt making.
