Artist Statement
As a student, Laura moved to London to study Graphic Design at Camberwell College of the Arts. Like many others, she found the experience daunting and was naturally apprehensive. However, what could have been a lonely and isolated experience was warmed by many businesses in the local community. She made friends simply by visiting local businesses and chatting about the area and its history.
It's this rich and warm community which inspires Laura’s paintings, particularly in a world where much-loved businesses are struggling. Her paintings serve as mementoes and memories for the people that visit and love these establishments. Especially as London changes and grows so quickly.
Laura's process usually starts by photographing the exterior of a building, these are then used as references for initial drawings. The exterior is then manipulated to fit into a workspace and painted using gouache.
