Artist Statement

Following on from sketching live at Wilderness Festival, Hamley began sketching live events in London before settling at the Crypt where the diverse range of music, musicians, audience members and the architecture of the Crypt itself inspired a rich new vein of work. Hamley’s work from the last 10 years includes experimental shadow paintings, the exploration of archetypes, psychological terminology and works made in response to the landscape we are surrounded by, in particular managed land such as parks and golf courses at night where people have imposed a rigid structure upon nature.

Hamley sketched performances live at Jazz Live at the Crypt from November 2018 until April 2020 using carbon and white pencil on grey paper, selecting some to work up into paintings using acrylic on canvas. Hamley took part in Dulwich Festival’s annual Artists’ Open House for a decade and was the map administrator for the Open House booklet.

Hamley was also the sketch artist for Wilderness Festival for 5 consecutive years, 2014 – 2018. “The sketches were polished, finished and accurate yet retaining the ‘live’ touch we were after.” Festival organizer Tess Acheson, Director at Secret Emporium.

Her landscape work has been selected for exhibition at the Mall Galleries for several competitions, listed below, and in 2018 her illustrations were selected by notable publishing group The Folio Society for their collectable edition of Black Beauty, the classic childrens’ book by Anna Sewell. Education: BA(Hons) in Design and Illustration at Bath Faculty of Art & Music
